How You and Senior Pets Can Heal Together

We know healing isn’t easy, and sometimes you just can’t do it alone at all. We are humans and that’s normal. We are born to socialize and die out of loneliness. Guess what? Pets experience the same thing. They, too, suffer from health problems when they are lonely.

We know healing isn’t easy, and sometimes you just can’t do it alone at all. We are humans and that’s normal. We are born to socialize and die out of loneliness. Guess what? Pets experience the same thing. They, too, suffer from health problems when they are lonely.

In The Dodo’s Adoption Day, Chimbey the 10-year-old pitbull was dropped off a shelter. He couldn’t walk anymore out of old age, and it seemed like he didn’t expect to be healed anymore, until someone adopted him.

Here’s a few transcription from the video:

“He was deflated, like he'd just given up and he'd accepted his fate. That's the first time I've actually seen a dog like that. That's what sort of broke my heart…Chimbey became my 63rd foster dog. When you foster, you may be the only reason why this dog is gonna make it out alive and into a home. You just kind of have to focus on with a joy and not on the hurt…Chimbey is doing really really well he's opening up more and more to us every day. He's found his voice. It was almost as if he'd always been here. He's part of the family. He's an old man. He's been through a lot, but now just gets to be a happy dog. He can sleep all day if he likes. We're happy with that. He just brings us so much joy, and we're just gonna give him the best life…”

In the same way, we also heal from our pets. Steve Greig, an accountant from Colorado, was grieving his pup’s death. He decided to move on from the pain by adopting eight senior dogs. He told The Dodo, “A month or two went by and I still felt so horrible about it.” He then realized that he would only feel better if something good happened that prevented his pup from dying.

He immediately adopted eight senior dogs. While he healed by means of taking good care of the dogs in their late age, the dogs were also healing him from his regret that he could have done something to prevent the death of his pup. Now he’s making an effort to make eight senior dogs live a longer and happy life. – from goodnewsnetwork.org
