Spiritual Cleansing—How Do The Experts Do It?

Spiritual cleansing is grounded on the idea that everything is made up of energy. Not just you, but even your house, your pets, the trees, your gadgets, and your car. Everything.

That’s why objects from a bad relationship often feels difficult to look or be around at, because they are full of bad energy.

That’s why stolen healing stones bring bad luck because they radiate bad energy. That’s why you never feel safe in a house that has an unfortunate past because it still carries the negative energy from the previous owners. Most importantly, you yourself feel heavy, lethargic, and exhausted because you are full of negative energy.

Spiritual cleansing is a ritual that can help release this negative energy and make space for positive energy. So how do we begin?

First, identify the cause of the negative energy. You can only remove problems if you are aware of them, right? It goes the same with spiritual cleansing. It is only effective if you know what to cleanse.

For example, you have long been feeling back pain because of bad posture. Observe why you do this posture. Why do you droop your shoulders? It is because you feel shy about your chest, that you have a heart condition and have been trying to hide it? Or you just feel sad, and something has been bothering you for a long time? What is the cause of this insecurity or sadness? Is it from a bad relationship? Is it from a fight with your family or friends? What trauma could you possibly have? Observe the subtle hints that your body and environment is expressing so that you and your body can agree to a solution.

Once you have identified the problem, we now need to clear this negative energy by making them move so that they can be released. Negative energy is known to be stagnant. They are there for a reason. You have nourished them for so long through minimal habits that you were not aware of doing. You are feeding the wrong energy. You are investing on energy that will only deplete your existence.

According to Barbara Moore, a bestselling author, teacher, and student of wonder and magic, particularly on the area of unseen energies, there is not a single way of cleansing our spirit. It is different for each and everyone because we are all created uniquely for our different purposes. Luckily, she has provided us with 20 Powerful Practices for Cleansing and Clearing Your Energy Field from her book, Modern Guide to Energy Clearing.

The list includes techniques that are Movement-Based, Water-Based, Fire-Based, Air-Based, and Spirit-Based. From these categories, explore on what works for you. You’ll know that it works if you feel different and refreshed every after doing the ritual. These means that you have to do it with consistency, as spiritual cleansing should be done several times, especially if you feel really troubled.

MOVEMENT-BASED

  • Mountain Pose

  • Although still, and you’re not really moving at all while doing this pose, holding the pose is a little but very important movement. Aside from engaging your core and balance, this pose should establish your intention in life and manifest it. Make sure your posture is correct: align your ears, shoulders, hips, and ankles. Expand your chest so you breathe more air. This will allow energy to enter from your head, and when you release it, imagine the negative energy flow down from the soles of your feet into the earth.

  • Walking

  • Walking is effective when you feel that your mind is clogged. The movement from your body will heat up this clog and release it out from your system. Begin with the mountain pose, making sure your posture is still correct, and start walking around. A mantra of attracting positive energy will also help. One of Barbara Moore’s favorite saying is from the fourteenth-century mystic and theologian Julian of Norwich: “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.” You can use this or choose your own that suits your problem and character.

Walking will surely remove intense negative energy and clear sudden anxiety.

  • Dancing

  • Dancing is the natural way of moving your energy. Unlike the mountain pose and walking, you don’t have to focus on anything for dancing. Just listen to what your body wants to move and let it move. It’s the perfect type of release. You can also do it at parties, dance classes, or alone in a room. It’s your choice on what type of dance you are more comfortable with. Don’t mind the awkward feeling. Let go of the forms and just dance.

  • Yin Yoga

  • Yin yoga focuses on holding passive poses for long periods from 1 to 5 minutes for beginners. This type of movement is excellent in releasing deeply held stagnant energy. First timers should be prepared for an emotional and physical experience. Barbara Moore highly suggests yin yoga, although any yoga is helpful for spiritual cleansing because many asanas (what they call the poses in yoga) create spaces in the body.

  • Sound

  • Cleansing with sound is commonly used in spaces like house warming events. Producing sound in a space will release the negative energy and attract positive energy for the new occupants. This is also done in Chinese charm bracelets, and Indian healing jewelries before the newly bought accessory is worn. Barbara Moore says that while this cleansing is specifically effective for spaces and objects, you may also do this to yourself.

You don’t have to buy a music instrument to do spiritual cleansing with sound. You can simply place beans inside a plastic container and use it as a shaker. You can also tap on your books to use it as a drum.

    WATER-BASED

  • Washing

  • Washing can simply be done by washing your hands or your face. If you still feel clogged by negative energy, you may take a bath, so go on and enjoy that bath.

  • Infusions

  • Adding essential oils to your bath does wonders for your overall emotional well-being. The most popular infusions used are lavender and sage. Just make sure to avoid using oils you are allergic to.

  • Visual Meditation with Chakras

  • You may try lying on water or in your bathtub and visualize your chakras. Your chakras are the powerhouses in your body that spin continuously to store, absorb, and release energy for your body. This has 7 areas: crown (at the top of your head), third eye (in the middle of your eyebrows, in between your forehead), throat, heart, solar plexus (upper abdomen), sacral (lower abdomen), and root (at the tailbone or end of your spine). The chakras are responsible for different areas and taking care of them will secure your energy and heal the damage parts in your body.

    FIRE-BASED

  • Burning

  • Remember how in some movies, those who are moving on from a heartbreak burn the items from their relationship? This is actually because it is a form of fire-based spiritual cleansing. You may write everything that you want to release in a paper, and burn the paper. This act will result into a very emotional release.

  • Candle Work

  • To try this one you must first hold a small unlit candle in your hands and ground yourself. Focus your energy and release everything that you want released in the candle. Afterward, seal it by using a small pointed object and write on the candle the same intentions you want released. If the list is many, make your writing small so everything will fit. Finally, light the candle and watch as the writings burn away.

  • Visual Meditation with Light

  • This involves meditating by imagining that you are enveloped by a bright white light, making you feel safe. Breathe in and out slowly. Take your time and let this bright white light shine on all your woes and release your negative energy into the universe.

    AIR-BASED

  • Smudging

  • The word “smudging” means to pass something through smoke or to pass the smoke over and around something. It is the smoke that purifies., so don’t worry you don’t have to mess around with ashes. You can use incense for this or sage.

  • Breath Work
  • This spiritual cleansing simply involves breathing. Inhale for 1, 2, 3, and exhale for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. That’s it. This is useful for sudden stress that is so overwhelming. You can practically do this anywhere and you don’t need to use anything to do it.

  • Organization

  • Believe it or not, this is simply organizing your things. Letting go of things that do not matter anymore or do not get used anymore is so important. Your space can only hold so much. Remember, we can only absorb energy if we have space for it. You can hold an item, ask yourself if it sparks joy. If it does, keep it. If it doesn’t, throw it away.

    EARTH-BASED

  • Crystals

  • The most common cleansing you can do is by keeping a healing stone inside your pocket. Just touch it whenever you need grounding. You can also meditate using a healing stone. Just proceed to your usual meditation routine, but this time, you are holding on to your stone. • Trees

  • Find any tree, touch its trunk. Envision your negative energy. Collect it, and channel it into your hand. Release the negative energy into the tree and the tree will release it into the earth. If there’s no tree around, simply touching the ground will do.

  • Pets

  • Playing with your pet can be a good form of spiritual release but do not focus the negative energy on them. Just pet them and have fun with them. That’s all.

  • Napping

  • Napping for 5 to 15 minutes can immediately boost anyone’s energy, because it creates space in the mind. With enough space, you’ll be renewed into absorbing positive ones. For working people, this is not always possible, but try it when you can. It will do wonders.

    SPIRIT-BASED

  • Praying

  • Regardless of any religion, believing in the Divine does a lot for the emotional well-being of a person. Whether it’s to have someone to confide in, or someone to be hopeful for, we all get encouraged by hope. You may substitute meditation for praying if your belief system does not practice praying.

  • Acts of Kindness

  • Acts of kindness counter negative energy. For example, selfish or greedy acts can be solved by being generous. If you feel angry, you can release this by forgiving. Other forms of spiritual cleansing mentioned above are all effective for sudden bursts of energy. Acting on kindness, however, is very effective for removing deep-seated negative energy within yourself. If you release these energies, nothing can trigger you negatively anymore. Make sure you commit yourself to this type of spiritual cleansing to feel the benefits.
